The Roman Catholic Church held both spiritual and political power durning the European feudal age. The Pope (head of Church) ruled over the Papel States and had the right to sanctify (pick) a monarch. The Church used religion as a unifying force through shared beliefs bonding people together - thus making the Church very wealthy and powerful among the countries of Europe.
